The Essence of Queirón: Heritage and High-Altitude Viticulture
At the heart of Queirón lies our commitment to varietal expression—a relentless effort to reclaim historic vineyard sites and harmonize ancestral traditions with modern innovation. We work with a vibrant mosaic of viticultural possibilities: centenarian Garnacha vines, alongside plots of twenty, thirty, and forty years of age situated at 600 meters. From high-elevation Graciano to idyllic Tempranillo perched atop the peaks of the Sierra de Yerga, and emerging varieties like Tempranillo Blanco and Maturana Blanca, our wines are the realization of a dream born in the vineyard.
Extreme Altitudes, Poor Soils, and Diverse Microclimates
Located in the heart of Rioja Oriental, Bodegas Queirón cultivates a selection of varieties that mirror the singularity of our terroir. The extreme altitude, nutrient-poor soils, and climatic diversity allow us to explore both traditional and indigenous grapes, always through a lens of environmental stewardship and biodiversity.
Red Varieties
-
Tempranillo: The emblematic grape of Rioja, grown across Queirón’s diverse parcels, all at elevations exceeding 600 meters. It is prized for its adaptability to distinct microclimates and its versatility in producing wines with robust structure and exceptional ageing potential.
-
Graciano: An indigenous variety that imparts vital acidity, freshness, and aromatic complexity. At Queirón, we cultivate it in high-altitude vineyards like the Sierra de Yerga, where extreme conditions coax out the purest expression of the grape.
-
Garnacha: A variety with deep roots in the region, sourced from historic vineyards such as El Arca. It yields wines of elegance, depth, and longevity—a living testament to the viticultural heritage of Rioja Oriental.
White Varieties
-
Viura: The traditional white grape of Rioja, essential for crafting whites with bright acidity and cellaring potential. At Queirón, it is often blended to create balanced, expressive wines.
-
Tempranillo Blanco: A natural mutation of Tempranillo, cultivated by Queirón to produce white wines defined by their freshness, minerality, and elegance.
-
Maturana Blanca: A rare indigenous variety rescued by Queirón, with records dating back to the 17th century. It produces wines of superb quality and distinct character, though in very limited production.
